Has anyone tried out the SIMPLE features of ser? Based on what I have read it appears to support contacts and presence. If so, which clients has it been tested with?

There will be a presence agent in the upcoming release. With the more end-device-oriented approach, like Windows Messenger pursues, you don't need SIMPLE support in server and you can use a proxy server.

Does the presence agent you mentioned support the SIMPLE standard then?
Also, I'm not quite sure how the approaches you suggest differ, server side SIMPLE vs a Proxy Server.

that's about where the SIMPLE presence logic lives -- in end-devices (like in Windows Messenger) or in network on behalf of dump end-devices (that's what PA is good for).
