This is probably problem with bad mysql client/server versions. It was described with solution somewhere in this list - try to search archives.
May be, I have sent you bad version of the client library. Sorry.

Read presence handbook (stored on that FTP too) - you have to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH before running ser. Vaclav
