We have tested x-lite and x-pro extensively and I am sure that it works
with ser. Check if your username, password, and domain/realm is
configured correctly, the username must be without @domain part.

Thank you for your input. We are guessing that our softphone (XTEN Pro) and the SER are
using different digests when exchanging passwords.
I know it's not your product, but are you aware of any digest setting that we can
change in the XTEN softphone? (We suspect that SER is using MD5, while the XTEN may be
using SHA?)
