Maybe you should download the source code of ser 0.8.14 from the ftp or CVS (as prefered because it has all the last changes, don't forget use the stable version) so you have all the control of the compilation, and all the freedom to perform changes and probe, and when you compile the package a ser_mysql.sh and serctl sripts will be created.
