If I do download the latest version of the server and compile from source, I do have a sparc system with 64 bit. Will the server software run on 64bit ?

It runs fine on 64b. You can get sources from SVN:
svn co https://openser.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/openser/branches/1.4 kamailio
or the tarballs: http://www.kamailio.org/pub/kamailio/latest/src/
