Does this mean that we can't call a SIP phone and redirect it to voicemail after some time when nobody picks the phone? I have put these two statements in ser.cfg but they don't seem to work!

I am getting the voicemail greeting directly after I call the SIP phone? Please let me know. Thank you.

dial voicemail allows you to call your own voicemail, the server will first send an INVITE to your phone and then REFER to redirect it to the voicemail. Because voicemail currently has no IVR interface, you can only record a message.

quick guess: either your configuration is wrong, or the phone you are trying to call is simply not registered currently. If you are conneted to the voicemail directly this means there was a negative reply on your request (e.g. 404 because not registered).

The timer apply only if callee's phone is ringing but he doesn't pick up.

If I am not applying ans_machine, i.e, with the regular SER, the phone rings. The phone is registering correctly witht he SER. I dont understand why is it going to the voicemail directly after I start ans_machine. Please suggest. Thank you.

ok Sesha, I will make a couple of suggestions to you.
- read the FAQ about use of voicemail I posted several times recently ago http://iptel.org/~faqomatic/fom-serve/cache/92.html - read the administration guide at http://www.iptel.org/ser/doc/seruser/seruser.html - make yourself familiar with SIP at http://iptel.org/ser/sipintro.html and www.iptel.org/sip/
read it, digest it and I'm absolutely confident that you will be able to resolve the above problem quickly. Understanding the techology takes some time, but there is hardly any way to skip it.
I suppose the specific error you are referring to is related to how your SER script is written.
