While this could be hardly related to this particular issue, you have to know that vanilla RedHat-9 is shipped with buggy glibc. I have at least one proprietary program that doesn't work with it correctly. Replacing 2.3.2-11.9 glibc rpms with 2.3.2-27.9.7 from RedHat-9 updates fixed a startup crash of that program for me.
