I think we need to clarify this part of the docs before release. It was the same in 4.1 and we should have made a decision by now or delete it. ;-)
In addition, I'd recommend incorporating the text files with compilation instructions from the source code directory into the XML docs. These files are typically not included in RPM-based distributions and contain important information for users of app_java.
In addition the app_java Makefile doesn't let me build a README without installing the Java runtimes.
