Just my opinion, but this will allow CentOS and RedHat based systems to
make sure of memcached. This would not be a bad thing if the change is
easy to make.

yes, the signatures changed unfortunately. Its fine to improve the
documentation at any time. With regards to the change, maybe its possible
to
add some #ifdef around it if libmemcache export its internal version
somehow.
