Yes. It works.

Yes.

No.

Make sure you have the required packages (read INSTALL and grep for
Solaris, it is a little outdated, but should work).
You need at least GNU make and gcc (sun cc should work too, but the code
uses more optimisations on gcc). bison is recommended instead of 
Solaris yacc (with Solaris yacc you need to comment out one line in
cfg.y).

I doubt that anyone ran performance tests on the same hardware on both
linux and solaris.
