You're right Bogdan, I changed my configuration to connect to localhost:
modparam("usrloc", "db_url", "mysql://openser:openserrw@localhost/openser")

Now it works very well.
just for curiosity, is it important that the DBHOST in the file openserctl
file match the host used in openser.cfg for db_url ? Are these two
parameters independent ?
