[Serusers] mysql necessary to add users to ser?

Hello!

I'm reading through a couple ser tutorials, and they're both suggesting to 
install mysql and to use the mysql.so module.

But I'm confused - is mysql necessary or not?

The default ser.conf seems to suggest that it's an option; but the serctl 
usage text shows '*' next to each action that requires a mysql pwd... 
including adding/deleting users.

How would I add/delete users if not using mysql?
