humm, interesting.

Can you try to put following on top of your config?

---
debug=4
log_stderror=no

memdbg=5
memlog=5

log_facility=LOG_LOCAL0

fork=yes
children=4
---

Make sure you don't override these variable in later config. This should
work, if not something is really wrong with your installation.
