Unlike binary package based Linux distro like Fedora Core, Gentoo is
a source based Linux distro. The ebuild file and the openser.init
file are enough for a Gentoo admin to install openser onto a Gentoo
Linux. The ebuild file is actually a bash file, which will
automatically fetch the source tarball and build it upon launch.
In its current form (including in the source tarball), one will have
to put it to place like /usr/local/portage/net-misc/openser on one's
own Linux box manually, then execute 'emerge -av openser' to install
it. If it's been included into official Gentoo portage tree, one just
need to execute the above command to install it.
I also admit that Gentoo can also use binary package to install
software, but as my understanding, that concept isn't really for the
purpose of mass-distribution.
