Hello,
the log shows clear that it tries to parse a URI that is null (actually
contains the string "<<null>>" which is used for pseudo-variables), see
the log message again:

Are you updating the URI in From/To headers and the do msg_apply_changes()?
There is no reason to fail for '_', being used a lot and clearly shown
in the logs it is not that case. You can try with a user without '_'
just to convince yourself.
