The answer is yes, you can put SER before the Asterisk server and thereby use
media proxy to load balance the RTP stream handling. 

As for how much work it will be to migrate to this setup? Well, that depends a
lot on how your Asterisk is set up. It's hard to say whether or not it will be
easy or hard, but it is most certainly possible (and actually rather common).
