There is no problem with SER. SER delivers IM between any Messenger versions. There 
is a problem with WM though -- its instant messaging is only understood by other 
WM's but not by anybody else because it is proprietary. Someone posted a link to
MS's statement on that that to this mailing list a while ago, it must be in
archives.
