It's helped quite alot!  Thanks, Dave.  I replaced "ext" with "pserver".

Quick note for those used to doing things like me:

bash$ export CVS_RSH=ssh
bash$ export CVSROOT=:pserver:anonymous at cvs.ser.berlios.de:/cvsroot/ser
bash$ cvs checkout <modulename>
--

Works fine.
