Does the presence agent you mentioned support the SIMPLE standard then? 

Also, I'm not quite sure how the approaches you suggest differ, server side
SIMPLE vs a Proxy Server.

There will be a presence agent in the upcoming release. With the more
end-device-oriented approach, like Windows Messenger pursues, you don't
need SIMPLE support in server and you can use a proxy server.
