I also tried to connect with openssl and it works fine for me (Kamailio 3.3 on Debian Squeeze). This is my tls.cfg:

[server:default]
method = TLSv1
verify_certificate = no
require_certificate = no

private_key = /etc/certificates/labs.nic.at.key
certificate = /etc/certificates/labs.nic.at.crt
ca_list = /etc/certificates/terena-intermediate.pem

[client:default]
method = TLSv1
verify_certificate = no
require_certificate = no

private_key = /etc/certificates/labs.nic.at.key
certificate = /etc/certificates/labs.nic.at.crt
ca_list = /etc/certificates/terena-intermediate.pem
