Summary: statistics: add support for pvar for stats functions

Initial Comment:
This patch is enhancing the statistics module with two new functions:
update_stats( pvar, int)
reset_stats( pvar, int)

Please review and upload the patch for the 1.4 release and after that I will update the README file.
