for those using that piece of code...
If the patch is staying for long time and if the developer of the
initial code is still around, then ask if he/she has interest in still
maintaining the code. If not, then submitter can apply for a
developer/maintainer for that module if has usages for it. The developer
team is willing to help in adopting new members, it is why actually many
put efforts in writing development documentation, either as tutorials or
doxygen -- they are very valuable, even more than new features at this time.
The project has grown and we agreed to be open for contributions if the
contributors are willing to maintain. As I could see, most of the
developers focused on the modules they are using, with core and main
modules shared between a group. We cannot blame some developers because
others lost interest, or even when initial developers disappeared. Be
sure that core and major modules are going to be maintained and improved
as everybody is using that piece of code.
We should ensure a natural growing, a balanced number of developers
versus code -- it is very easy to write code, hard part is to maintain.
It is why the core was kept small, everything implemented as modules, to
ensure stability and easy maintenance. Apart of core and the major
modules (I think we should define them), I don't see a release stopper
because of bugs in other modules.
Cheers,
Daniel
