if you check the source, you will find that it is taken from credentials
or (if not found) from from header.

i don't think there exist any standard on naming pvars.

what do you mean by "for digest auth"?  if Digest username has realm
included, $au just includes userpart and $aU includes whole username.
if Digest username does not include realm, then $au == $aU.
