Anca,

Would it be possible to determine if the remote domain is xmmp  
enabled by checking the SRV records for the domain? When you send an  
IM or Subscribe first check for SIP and then Jabber entries, subject  
to local search policy.

E.g.

DNS SRV _xmpp-server._tcp.google.com.
