I started a dokuwiki page to collect such experiences with different SIP 
clients. I added your comments about Gaim, you may want to update.

The watcher should send an unSUBSCRIBE to become inactive watcher. Did 
you see the SUBSCRIBE with Expires 0 when the phone unREGISTER?
